Orangutan Conservation Swings into Vegas, then Home to the Jungle

14th October 2016, Las Vegas, USA: ICCA members are invited to trace the footprints of the Borneo Orangutan Project, a ground-breaking wildlife conservation campaign for one of the world’s most lovable endangered species, which began in Barcelona in 2015 and concludes at IMEX America this October, in the spectacular city of Las Vegas.

The Borneo Orangutan Project (BOP) is part of ICCA’s #RoadtoSarawak campaign to the 2016 ICCA Congress in the city of Kuching in Sarawak, Malaysia, in which all ICCA members had the chance to raise awareness of the campaign, and take an amazing opportunity to become an “adoptive guardian” for a year to precious young orang-utans.

The BOP was successfully launched at the IBTM 2015 in Barcelona, followed by AIME 2016 in Melbourne, then on to IT&CM in Shanghai and IT&CM Asia in Bangkok.

Up for adoption in Las Vegas is the comical mischief maker and acrobatic 15-year-old Manap, who is undergoing care at world-renowned Semenggoh Wildlife Centre which researches and rehabilitates injured and orphaned animal species for future release to the wild.

To participate, visit the Malaysia Booth 2841, to snap a photo with “Brooke” – the official ICCA Congress 2016 mascot – and share it on social media with the hashtag “#RoadtoSarawak” “#IMEX16” and “#ICCAWorld”.

The announcement of the winner will be made by ICCA in the week after IMEX America, and ICCA will adopt Manap for a year on behalf of a chosen member upon the announcement.

At IMEX America, Malaysia also intends to drive Sarawak as one of the region’s freshest destinations for international events, and to promote membership of ICCA, a leading source of business and expertise for the association meetings market.

“Sarawak is very proud to not only be hosting the world’s biggest platform for meetings, the 55th ICCA Congress 2016, but also to have reignited a global interest in orang-utan conservation, and in the same year that we celebrate the milestone of the 10th Anniversary of Business Events in Sarawak. SCB continues to put Sarawak’s brand on the world map as a leading 2nd tier destination – watch this space,” said Mike Cannon, Managing Director of Sarawak Convention Bureau.

“We have enormously high expectations for the Sarawak Congress: our education programme has some exciting new topics and experimental formats, we’ve lined up external expert speakers on entrepreneurship, corporate anthropology and sales and pricing theory, and we will be experimenting with networking theory and practice in numerous, unique ways, inspired by Sarawak’s tribal heritage to find modern interpretations of concepts such as ritual, taboo, status and initiation.  We look forward to working with our friends on the Local Host Committee to put on a truly memorable experience.” says Martin Sirk, CEO, ICCA.
