Business Events in Sarawak Generates Over Half a Billion Ringgit to State’s Economy

Kuching, 19th August 2017: Malaysia’s pioneer in Business Events (BE), Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB), announced that conferences have injected over RM504 million into Sarawak’s economy since 2006, at the official launching of Redefining Global Tribes; Sarawak’s biggest ever destination campaign to enlarge the sector’s prominence in the national economy.

“This tremendous economic contribution of over half a billion ringgit to Sarawak is due to the work of SCB and its sector partners who have won 697 international, regional and national meetings, translating to almost 254 thousand delegates equivalent to 847 thousand delegate days in Sarawak,” said Sarawak’s Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

“By attempting to Redefine an industry and strengthen its branding impact internationally, we have opened Sarawak’s doors wider to the world and are actively showcasing Sarawak’s efficiency and capabilities to host prestigious Business Events,” said the Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

“Beyond the immediate RM504 million revenue, there is a greater impact derived from Business Events over the long term especially for medicine, technology, science, and other advanced industries – BE produces meaningful business relationships and international collaboration across a myriad of sectors,” said Dato Sri Dr. Muhd. Leo Michael Toyad Abdullah, SCB’s Chairman.

“These business relationships are the end goal of campaigns such as Redefining Global Tribes which aim to increase BE’s impact on the economy; to do so we need to create a stronger global identity by imprinting Sarawak’s cultural values of community, unity and identity upon the BE sector internationally,” he said when welcoming 100 senior members of national and international associations, academia, corporates, and media at the launch of the inaugural FAM trip for Redefining Global Tribes.

Amelia Roziman, SCB’s Chief Operating Officer revealed that the Redefining Global Tribes campaign was inspired by the state’s success in winning the 55th ICCA Congress, a landmark congress held in Kuching in 2016 which was themed “Gathering of the Global Tribes”.

“It was a real honour for Sarawak to be among the few Asian 2nd tier destinations to host and theme the ICCA Congress. The sequel campaign of ‘Redefining Global Tribes’ not only pays tribute to that achievement in 2016, but is also a strong reminder that amazing feats can be achieved when communities unite,” she said.

Guest of Honour, Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, assured the government’s support for the campaign and BE sector, “I am confident that Business Events will continue to flourish with such commitment from various key movers and shakers. Today, Business Events is more crucial than ever as most economies are being transformed into knowledge intensive economies.”

Formerly known as MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions), the Business Events (BE) sector drums up more than 5.5 times of expenditure when comparing business visitors to leisure tourists and creates the foundation for nations to transfer knowledge and development to its citizens.

The FAM trip of Redefining Global Tribes coincides with the inaugural Tribal Warrior Challenge in Kuching on August 19th; an obstacle course race which is open to the public, and in which the 100 VIP guests will be participating in the 3km Bizst Mode category.
