Tanoti Sdn Bhd is a congregation of Sarawakian women weavers and artisans dedicated towards the production, promotion and proliferation of hand-crafted fabrics. This continuously-growing community of craftswomen had its origins in a research and development workshop set up by a foundation established by Her Royal Highness the Queen of Malaysia in 2008, the Yayasan Tuanku Nur Zahirah. The workshop was privatised in 2012 pursuant to a restructuring exercise undertaken by the foundation. Tanoti aims to make good the vision of the foundation, that is to improve lives and livelihoods of womenfolk and rural communities through the ancient art of songket weaving. Tanoti House currently houses over 20 artisans, all practising songket weaving entirely by hand. Tanoti has established a community initiative to develop the craft potential of remote forest communities in Sarawak. Together with various organisations – Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, WWF-Malaysia and NTFP-EP – Tanoti works with approximately 23 Penan communities to develop their rattan plaited craft and bring their unique products to market. Tanoti has won the World Crafts Council Awards of Excellence for Handicraft 2014 and 2016 for its products, which is an endorsement of its commitment to the handcrafted products. It has also won the British Council Arthur Guinness Projects Entrepreneur for Good Peoples Choice Award 2014 and the MaGIC Amplify Award 2015, both of which recognize the companys social impact value in its work in women empowerment, heritage preservation and rural community building. Visitors to Tanoti House are able to purchase Tanoti songket pieces handwoven on-site by its artisans as well as rattan basketry products produced by the Penan communities in Sarawak.
