Karim: Business Events Need Strong Public and Private Sector Representation

 

 

 Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak / Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak, The Honourable Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah

 

15 February 2022, Kuching, Sarawak: The Honourable Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah announced Datuk Abang Haji Abdul Karim bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, President of Sarawak Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SCCI) and President of Sarawak Business Federation (SBF), as the new Chairman of Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak) for 2022-2023. 

He will be in lieu of Tan Sri Dato Sri Dr. Muhammad Leo Michael Toyad who helmed the Board as the first Chairman of BESarawak since doors opened in 2006.

Sarawak’s Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts,  and Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development also announced the appointment of three new members to the Board, namely Councillor Clarence Ting Ing Horh, Chairman of the Sibu Municipal Council; Associate Professor Dr. Hiram Ting Huong Yiew, Chairman of Sarawak Research Society; and Professor Jugdutt Singh, Chief Scientist and Chief Advisor for Digital Economy to the Sarawak Government whose extensive experience organising international business events is recognised in Melbourne, Australia as a Club Melbourne Ambassador.

BESarawak welcomes Datuk Abang Haji Abdul Karim bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg as Chairman.

 

 

“Business events serve vertical industries with customers from all sectors so we need strong representation from public and private sectors,” said The Honourable Dato Sri Abdul Rahman Karim. “Datuk Abang Abdul Karim is an influential leader with strong business acumen for many decades. He will be supported by equally capable figures to guide Sarawak’s business events industry. Congratulations and welcome on board.”

The new Board lineup gives good assurance of the industry’s future to Amelia Roziman and her team at BESarawak. “With Datuk Abang Abdul Karim’s tremendous insight and experience in business events — plus an excellent lineup of other visionary members to assist his role — new ideas will be brought forward on how we can optimise business events to develop the Sarawak Government’s 13 Key Priority Areas and support Sarawak’s economic growth and social development,” said Amelia. “We look forward to fruitful cooperation with our Board.”

Six members have been reappointed for 2022-2023 namely Dato Sri Dr. Wan Lizozman bin Wan Omar, State Financial Secretary; The Honourable Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang, Mayor of Miri; Mr. Hii Chang Kee, Permanent Secretary of Ministry for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts; Datu Dr. Muhammad Abdullah bin Zaidel, Director of Sarawak Economic Planning Unit; Associate Professor Dr. Margaret Chan Kit Yok, Senior Lecturer of Faculty of Plantation and Agrotechnology from Universiti Teknologi Mara, Sarawak; and Madam Audry Wan Ullok, President of Sarawak Tourism Federation.
