Bintulu Hospital held a course and workshop on the Ilizarov technique in orthopaedic surgery, an advancement in this field pioneered by a Russian doctor in the eighties, at the Park City Everly Hotel and at the hospitals premises from 21 st to 23 rd June. This surgical method, which is almost bloodless and leaves no scar, can lengthen the extremities, correct deformities in the bones and unite separated or infected bones.
According to Dr Aruchamy Ramalingam, organizing chairman and orthopaedic specialist at the Bintulu Hospital, 63 orthopaedic surgeons and paramedical personnel from throughout the nation and India attended the course and workshop, which was conducted by leading Ilizarov surgeons in the nation and from India. Dr, Ramalingam said many patients and even doctors were still unaware the Ilizarov technology was available in Sarawak although the General Hospital in Kuching and Bintulu Hospital had the facilities and personnel to carry out such surgeries. He believed only a few hospitals in West Malaysia could provide surgeries using the Ilizarov technique. Dr. Ramalingam could be reached at the Bintulu Hospital (Tel No: + 006 086 255899)
