30 May 2019, Kuching: Kuching, the capital city of Sarawak, has risen in global ranking, according to International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA); as indicated in its 2018 Global Statistics Report. This success not only reverberates within the State, but a big win for Malaysia as a nation.
To date, Malaysia has outranked competitive destinations such as UAE, Hong Kong (China) and Vietnam, placing the nation officially ranked 33 in the global rankings – moving up by 4 ranks since 2017.
Sarawak is excelling better than ever as announced by Chief Operating Officer of Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak), Amelia Roziman, “Our achievement has contributed to Malaysia’s ranking where in the Asia Pacific report segment; Malaysia has increased its meetings percentage by 11.7% in just 1 year, putting us at a fantastic 9th place out of 39 ICCA-listed destinations in the region. As of 2018, Kuching is ranked No.32 on ICCA’s global city rankings; ahead of some prominent cities such as Gold Coast, Perth, Penang, and Kota Kinabalu. This has been an improvement from its 2017 ranking at No. 37.”
Based on the recently released report, the ranking has placed Kuching as the highest-ranking city in Malaysia as a second tier destination, strengthening the State’s capabilities to bring in more business events.
To reiterate its commitment in the business events sector, BESarawak recently debuted its latest campaign, “Redefining Global Tribe Impact” (#RGTimpact) at IMEX Frankfurt 2019 on 20th to 23rd May – where Business Events are redefined by diversifying its impact of economy and legacy. The core legacy impact areas are focused on advancement of various fields, community benefits, economic outcomes and public policy – with each entailing a specific set of goals and strategies.
