From Nurul Iman Dimyati, MMJA 2012 Winner for MICE in Malaysia

“Currently, I’m writing from the comforts of my hotel room here in Anaheim, California after a tiring but fulfilling day from listening in on so many sessions.

First off, let me just say a million thanks to Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) for giving me this great opportunity to gain more knowledge and experience. Believe me, there was a lot of great stuff to take in.

The first day, despite having only managing to sit in on one very long session due to jet lag, it was what I considered a very good start for the convention/conference. I sat in on a session titled, ‘Dump the inverted pyramid: Narrative storytelling for all beat’ by a Pulitzer-winning reporter, I knew that I was hooked. It was such a good session, informative and the questions asked by attendees all contributed to a good discussion.

In a day, there were TONS of sessions and these sessions happen at the same time. It was difficult choosing which session to sit in on. I cannot help but feel envy that our American media counterpart has such a convention yearly, and if the number of attendees is anything to go by, they really do take the chance to attend conventions,

On my second day, I learned something a tad bit closer to how I work, which is a session how to dig deeper using social media. Here, they really do dig deep using social media and their tips are useful that I started using them of the bat. Of course, a few sessions after that were good too.

As a journalist, what I gained here is precious as I’m surrounded by a sea of journalists in a country that is renowned for this type of industry. However, at the end of the day, it is a matter of choosing which sessions are the best to help me back in Malaysia.

Maybe next time, if I’m lucky, a convention that discusses more on Asian territories will be awesome.

So, again, thank you very much for all the help to get me here! I’m enjoying it and I’ve yet to visit Disneyland! 🙂 ”
