YB Mayor urges more events to transform Miri City

Members of MBEC

5 July 2022, Miri: YB Mayor Adam Yii, Mayor of Miri City and Chairman of the Miri Business Events Committee (MBEC) has urged for more business events to be held in Miri in contributing to the transformation of the economy and social development.

During the 3rd MBEC meeting, he called for more business event planners including associations, government sectors, professional conference organizers, professional exhibition organizers, incentive houses, event management companies and event producers to consider Miri as their next national and international conventions, exhibitions, corporate meetings and corporate incentives destination.

In his speech, YB Mayor Adam commented that, “With strong support from the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak, Business Events Sarawak and the industry partners, Miri is more than ready”.

“We are looking at medium size business events at the moment while advocating to have our own convention and exhibition center in order to effectively drive the sector. International cities around the world are capitalizing on Business Events as one of the enablers to further transform their economic and social development. It makes sense for Miri to be part of this progressive thinking,” he added.

Under Sarawak’s Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which was launched by the Premier of Sarawak in 2021, the business events sector has been identified as an aspiration to empower communities and conserve heritage, culture and biodiversity, and promote investment and development in all sectors.

Madam Amelia Roziman, CEO of Business Events Sarawak said, “We are pleased with the progress of MBEC and working closely with the committees in aligning their aspirations to be Malaysia’s Business Events City with PCDS 2030’s objectives. We are progressively bidding, supporting and developing homegrown events while focusing on, but not limited to, the oil & gas, engineering, education, agriculture and tourism sectors for Miri.”

The MBEC meeting was held at the Miri Marriott Resort and Spa on 4th July 2022. The meeting successfully concluded the 3rd and 4th quarter strategic and tactical planning for 2022, where the sub-committee chairs presented their proposals for stakeholder development, product development, destination marketing & communications, capacity building, and business development.
