KUCHING, 18 July 2012: The Malaysia MICE Journalism Award (MMJA) is set to showcase journalistic excellence in business events in Malaysia. In its 2nd year running, the MMJA encourages media practitioners such as journalists, producers and writers to send in their entries by 5th September 2012.

The MMJA is an initiative of Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) and is jointly supported by Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) and the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI).

(L-R) Amelia Roziman, Global Marketing and Communications Director; Mike Cannon, MD of SCB; Paul D’Arcy, CEO of BCCK; Mike Cheng, Senior Marketing and PR Executive.

“The media have been crucial in supporting business events by highlighting relevant issues, and we hope that through MMJA, more in-depth reports on the industry will be produced thus creating a better understanding of the value of business events to the Malaysian community,” said Mr Mike Cannon, Managing Director of SCB in his speech during the media briefing for MMJA 2012 at BCCK.

Last year’s event saw more than 30 entries submitted, with Nursyazana Zulhimi (BERNAMA), Chin Mui Yoon (The Star) and Norzainah Zainal Abidin (Astro Awani) emerging winners in the MICE in Sarawak Category, MICE in Malaysia (Print/ Online Feature) and MICE in Malaysia (Broadcast Feature) categories, respectively.

This year’s award will have two categories- MICE in Malaysia and MICE in Sarawak, which are open to print / Online and Broadcast media. The main prize for each category is a convention package worth RM 10,000 to any journalism conference, inclusive of flight, accommodation and registration, and RM 2,000 spending money.

“I strongly encourage the media to submit your entries for MMJA 2012. Not only will you be gaining exposure and recognition through your work, and stand a chance to attend an international journalism conference to establish connections, but you will help pave the way for business events journalism in Malaysia,” said Mr Paul D’Arcy, CEO of BCCK.

An annual event, the MMJA strives for responsible, informed and original stories that offer an in-depth outlook on the business events industry in Malaysia. Formerly known as MICE, an acronym for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions, business events has been recently identified as one of the Entry Point Projects (EPPs) under the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP).
