Journalists Honoured for Excellence in Sarawak Business Events Reporting

3rd Malaysia MICE Journalism Award winners announced

Kuching, 30 November 2013: The search for Malaysia MICE Journalism Award 2013 MICE in Sarawak Category winner came to an end as the winning journalist was awarded for their journalistic excellence at the 7th Anak Sarawak Appreciation Award today.  The awards were presented by YB Datuk Haji Talib Bin Zulpilip, Assistant Minister of Tourism Sarawak, YB Dato’ Sri Dr. Muhd. Leo Michael Toyad Abdullah, Chairman of Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) and Datuk Hajjah Raziah Mahmud-Geneid, Chairperson of Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) and MMJA sponsor; amidst the pomp and splendour at the Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA).

YB Dato’ Sri Dr. Muhd. Leo Michael Toyad Abdullah, Chairman of SCB commented, “MMJA was created to encourage the media to create awareness and educate Malaysians on the business events industry. Thus, MMJA was our way of showing the industry’s appreciation and gratitude towards the media’s efforts and hard work in spreading the news on business events.”

The Edge reporter Sarah Voon won the MICE in Sarawak category with her report titled, “Sarawak Steps Up Efforts to Tap MICE Potential”

This year’s winners and finalists were selected from a pool of entries consisting of broadcast and print media. Experienced judges from the media and business events industry were appointed to judge the entries. Winners were selected based on in-depth and thought-provoking reports on MICE that were also accessible to a general audience, creating awareness on the business events industry.

The winner received a total prize of RM12, 000 comprising RM10, 000 worth convention package and RM2, 000 cash prize. The finalists walked away with RM500 cash each.

Datuk Hajjah Raziah Mahmud-Geneid, Chairperson of BCCK commented, “We hope to further promote and enhance the award so that more members of the media can get involved and play a role in developing not only Sarawak but Malaysia as a competitive Business Events destination.”

The Malaysia MICE Journalism Award (MMJA) was initiated in 2011 by Sarawak Convention Bureau (SCB) to recognize excellence in business events journalism. This initiative is jointly supported by the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) and Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) who have been sponsors of the MICE in Sarawak category since its inception.
